MINOR IRRIGATION SCHEMES
This sector is one of the core sectors under RSVY and is also a major thrust area. Out of the gross cropped area of the district, irrigation facility has been extended to only 22.09% prior to RSVY intervention. This is also one of the reasons for low crop intensity of in Jalpaiguri district, barring a few areas.
To improve this situation, a result oriented approach has been adopted through construction of drainage schemes, pucca channels, jhora bandh, water channels by putting into use the modern engineering techniques along with local, traditional methodology known as “Jampai”, keeping in mind, the felt needs in some of the rural belts in remote, hilly and undulated places. Setting up of water harvesting structure has also been envisaged.
The nature of the schemes undertaken in minor irrigation sector includes i)The construction of pucca field channels, Nallas for providing surface irrigation facilities and ii)Re-excavation, Renovation of the existing irrigation sources including construction of Water Harvesting Structures for preserving rain water for irrigation purpose.
